Breast Enlargement (Augmentation)
Breast enlargement (augmentation) surgery is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures chosen by women across the UK.

Understanding Breast Augmentation Surgery
When considering breast augmentation (enlargement) surgery, Adam Critchely will guide you through the various implant choices, outlining the benefits and potential drawbacks of each breast implant option, including the size, shape and projection.
Silicone Gel Implants
Silicone breast implants are used for breast augmentation (boob job) surgery.
They consist of a silicone outer shell filled with a silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue.
Silicone implants are popular due to their more natural appearance and texture compared to saline implants.
While generally considered safe, they can carry risks such as implant rupture, capsular contracture, and the need for replacement over time.
Advances in design and manufacturing have improved their safety and effectiveness, making them a widely chosen option for enhancing breast size and shape, and are the chosen implant used by Adam Critchley, and his team of experts.
Adam chooses to use Motiva manufactured breast implants due to their exceptional safety profile and innovative design. Motiva implants feature a nano-textured surface, which has been scientifically proven to minimise tissue inflammation, contributing to their excellent safety record, with over 3 million implants inserted globally over the past 12 years, with no reported cases of BIA-ALCL.
The Ergonomix Type 1 and 2 implants are specifically engineered for women with active and healthy lifestyles, combining an elastic gel and shell for natural movement. Additionally, each implant is equipped with a QiD chip, ensuring full identification and traceability, giving you complete peace of mind. Motiva implants can also be inserted by Adam through a small incision thanks to the JOY Dot program, reducing scarring. With demonstrated low rates of capsular contracture and implant rupture, Motiva breast implants are a top choice for patients seeking safety, reliability, and natural breast aesthetic.
What size breast implant should I get?
Implant Size
Implant size is measured by volume rather than by bra size. Adam Crithcley has years of experience and will assist you in selecting the right size, taking into account your rib cage size and the current breast tissue volume that you have.
Shape and Projection
It is important that your breast implant is firstly the right size, but also is the right shape and projection for your rib cage size and the aesthetic you are looking for. The types of shape and projection of breast implants include:
Teardrop Shape: Offers a more natural appearance in the upper breast than a firm round implant. However they can easily rotate which can require further surgery to correct.
Projection: You can choose how far the implant protrudes to achieve either a subtle or more pronounced look.
Breast enlargement: A Guide to the Surgical Procedure
The surgery will be conducted by experienced consultant breast surgeon, Adam Crithcley. Under general anesthesia, breast enlargement or your “boob job” will take place, ensuring you are asleep throughout the procedure. During the operation, Adam Critchley will make an incision in one of the following locations:
Under the Breast Crease: Is the most common incision type in the UK and Adam’s incision of choice, as it is a very discrete and relatively short scar.
Under the Armpit: This leaves no scar on the breast itself, though a small scar will be visible under the arm.
Around the Areola: Scarring is more noticeable, with a higher risk of breastfeeding difficulties or loss of sensation.
During the surgery, a pocket will be created in your breast by separating the breast tissue from the chest muscles and connective tissue, allowing for the insertion of the implant. The placement options include:
Under Breast Tissue: A popular technique that minimises pain, avoids loss of chest muscle strength and function, as well as avoiding the implant visibly moving toward the armpit when contracting the chest muscles (animation). Modern implants e.g. Motiva Ergonomix Type 2, are designed to avoid rippling or visible implants even in slim patients.
Under Chest Muscle: Suitable for individuals with minimal breast tissue to prevent the implant’s edge from being visible, however the muscle only covers the upper portion of the implant and sometimes leads to visible movement of the implant when tensing chest muscles, particularly in slim patients. This could also potentially cause more discomfort or loss of chest muscle strength and function.
Dual Plane Augmentation: Combines the above techniques positioning the implant partly under the breast tissue and partly under the chest muscle.
After the implants are correctly positioned, Adam will close the incision with several layers of dissolvable stitches. Stitches will be trimmed at day 7-10 and will slowly dissolve over a few months.Water-resistant dressings will be applied to protect the wound. Adam typically performs drainless/surgery with no drains.
